Some good advice from the ITV4 boxing team.....get yourself down to the York Hall!
On the recent ITV4 show covering the Williams/Sosnowski fight, all the commentary team waxed lyrical about the York Hall.
Gabriel Clarke took viewers on a rare look behind the scenes at this iconic place, now seventy-nine years old. "It's the sort of venue which is in the blood of boxing people, and once you come here as a fighter, as a trainer, as a fan, you come back and you keep enjoying what this venue has to offer".
Gabriel asked boxer turned trainer Jim McDonnell what makes York Hall so special. "It's like boxing in my own front room - you feel the atmosphere, see the atmosphere. It's a fantastic feeling".
Jim Rosenthal: "everyone just loves this place".
Carl Froch: "the atmosphere is unbelievable".
Barry McGuigan: "there's a big buzz about the place. It's almost like the fans are in the ring with you [they're so close to the action] .....the atmosphere in this place is phenomenal".
John Rawling spoke to the "armchair fans", recommending the four-round fights that are the learning fights for young boxers, and which normally don't get shown on TV. "Often it's the most exciting and well-matched action you see in the evening". He added "I tell you what, if you live in the London area and are a bit interested in boxing, do yourself a favour and get down here [to York Hall] - this is good stuff".
We can't disagree.
